FAQ

Do you have a question about how this whole thing works? We have a list of answers here: FAQ

Set Up Your Account

You should already have a Gold Membership to Xbox Live ("Gamer Tag"). If you don't have one, you will need to sign up (which is free), and upgrade your membership to Gold (which requires a credit card and costs $7.99/month).

Xbox LIVE Registration

Sign up by visiting http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/joinlive.htm. Follow the path to create a new account. You’ll be asked to enter an email address. Next, you’ll be presented with a screen asking for your date of birth and your region. You’ll need to set up a password and set a secret question and answer pair for password retrieval. You’ll also select a gamer avatar and answer some questions about how you play games.

Once you are fully registered, you’ll be presented with the option of purchasing a Gold Membership to LIVE at $7.99/mo. Once the system collects and processes your credit card information, you’ll be all set.

XNA Creators Club Registration

Next, you’ll need an XNA Creators Club Premium Membership, which you can get at creators.xna.com. If you have a code for a free membership trial you can redeem it on your console or online here: https://live.xbox.com/en-US/accounts/RedeemToken.aspx

Be sure that you are signed into the correct Gamer Tag when you redeem your code. The membership is attached to a Gamer Tag, and, if you are logged into the wrong one, then your registration here at creators.rockband.com won't work.

Rock Band Creators Club Registration

Now you’ll need to register for a Rock Band Creators Club account. When you’ve successfully registered, you’ll be taken to your dashboard and you’ll see that the username you registered in the upper left of the screen, next to the Creators logo.

You’ll see a button on this dashboard screen that asks you to link your Rock Band Creators account to your Gamertag, which is your Xbox LIVE account. When you click the ‘Link Account’ button, a new screen will appear in a separate window. You’ll need to enter your Xbox LIVE username and password in the displayed fields and click ‘Link Account.’ Once you do this, we’ll be able to verify that you have a Premium Creators Membership, which will allow you to participate fully in the song creation pipeline.

There are two common problems people have when they attempt to link their accounts. Often this shows up as an incorrect Windows LIVE account login screen: just a mostly blank page with a small white rectangle in the upper left hand corner. There are two things you can do to try to fix this:

  1. Go to http://windows.live.com and make sure you are logged out

  1. Open your browser options and clear any cookies that have "live.com" in them

Playtesting & Peer Reviewing Songs

In order to review songs you will need to be set up with a Premium XNA membership. Trial memberships will not allow you to view or download songs which are in Playtest or Peer Review. Once you have your accounts set up, the process is as follows:

  • Find a song you want to review.
    • Click on the "Songs" button at the top of the website and browse for a song you like. You can search by title, author, difficulty, or look for songs in Playtest or Peer Review.
    • Songs in Playtest may not be ready for final approval yet, but the author wants feedback. We require every song to go through at least one round of playtesting before being submitted for Peer Review.
    • Songs in Peer Review are being submitted as final. During the Peer Review process you are deciding whether or not the song is ready to be released to the public.
  • Once you get to the song information page, you should see a link that says "Download". This will download a "SONGNAME.rbs" file to your hard drive.
  • Go to Magma to learn about how to transfer the song to your Xbox.
  • There's a great page on the Playtest Process that you should read so you know how to Playtest and Peer Review Songs
  • After you try the song in Audition Mode, go back to the song detail page and either submit comments, or submit a Peer Review.
    • Comments takes you directly to a forum thread just for that version of that song. You can add your own comments to the thread.
    • Peer Review takes you to a form that allows you to fill out checkboxes to approve or fail the songs. If you decide the song is not ready, you MUST include specific comments on why the song failed.

Submitting Songs

  • Upload your song to creators.rockband.com for Playtest. More details about this process are on the Web_Walkthrough & Website#Adding a Song to the Pipeline pages.
    • Playtest is a test submission of your song to allow other members of the community to try it out. The primary difference between playtesting and Peer Review is that there is no chance (and no risk!) of the song being approved via a Playtest.
    • If you haven't finished your authoring yet, or you aren't sure if you think the song is ready, you should do a round of playtesting first. We require that you do at least one round of playtesting for a new song before you submit it to Peer Review.
    • Once your song is ready, submit it for Peer Review. Here other members of the community will try out your song, give you feedback, and submit reviews. Once your song has passed the review process, it is automatically approved for sale on Xbox Live.
  • Sell your song on Xbox Live
    • All songs submitted and approved are final submissions. They will be uploaded to Xbox Live Marketplace and will be available for sale when the public store opens in early 2010.
